A stay at Steinhaus Ranch offers seclusion, space, scenery, and history on a 170-acre slice of scenic Llano County.
The two-story Steinhaus, which is German for stone house, was constructed in 1897. The owners have added modern touches, such as central heat and air and an all-electric kitchen, without compromising the home’s historic and architectural character. One imagines this native stone house looks much the way it did in the late 19th Century.
A full-length front porch and second-level balcony are great spots to curl up with a book, socialize, watch cattle roam just outside the fence, sip a beverage, or gaze at the stars after dark.
The living room is a homey and inviting space with loveseats, occasional chairs, a flat-screen TV, plenty of windows, and a potbelly stove.
Nearby, a fully equipped, country-style kitchen, accentuated with an eclectic collection of knickknacks, extends the length of the home with an antique dining table at one end. A grill is available for outdoor cooking.
The country-home vibe continues throughout the house, which has a preponderance of antique-styled furniture and an interesting assortment of decor. Colorful quilts decorate beds and walls in many rooms.
Steinhaus Ranch can sleep up to 10 guests in four bedrooms. An adjacent guesthouse can accommodate two to four more, making this property an ideal place for reunions, company retreats, weddings, or any other weekend or midweek escape.
If you want to get out and about, diversions abound. The Castell General Store, a country mercantile that offers tasty burgers and access to the Llano River, is just a seven-minute drive. Head east on RR 152 or Texas 29 for a 20-minute drive to Llano, where you can stroll the historic courthouse square, browse art galleries, shop boutiques, or chow down on a variety of cuisines. Less than 45 minutes away is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a not-to-be missed Texas State Park.
No matter how you spend your time at Steinhaus Ranch or how many people you share it with, you’re bound to leave with fond memories of your visit to this piece of Texas Hill Country history. It’s where to stay in Llano County.
