Wave goodbye to Old Man Winter and wave in a change of seasons. If spring’s your time of year, Llano County is your kind of place. The outdoors awaits as wildflowers paint the hills, rivers and lakes gear up for a season of water sports, and celebrations and festivals abound.
Don’t leave home without a set of clubs. Llano County has about nine golf courses, four of which are open to the public, while the others are part of Horseshoe Bay Resort. We can’t guarantee a bogey-free day, just a few pleasurable hours on the links amid breathtaking Hill Country scenery.
If you brought your appetite with you, don’t pass up a chance to experience gustatory bliss at Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que in Llano. Stop at the pit on your way in, pick your protein, walk indoors to select sides and desserts, and then sit down to world-class barbecue.
For a visual feast, drive almost anywhere in Llano County and marvel at nature’s colorful landscapes. The bluebonnet remains the star of this show, but Indian paintbrushes, Indian blankets, and pink evening primroses make up an impressive supporting cast. Check the internet for wildflower sightings or just point your ride in any direction. For a little guidance, stop at the Llano Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center.
If time permits, drive along the Willow City Loop. From Llano, take Texas 16 southbound, one of the Hill Country’s most scenic drives, and follow the signs to Willow City Loop. Like a slow sip of a fine Chardonnay, these road trips are best taken at a leisurely pace as you savor nature’s floral bounty mixed with hills, creeks, old wooden fences, rock formations, wildlife — and vows to come back to Llano County next spring.
