Vacation on the next level at this Inks Lake retreat

612 N. Rockwood, Buchanan, Texas
Take a few steps from this rustic modern home to a day of fun on Inks Lake.

Book a stay at 612 N. Rockwood and prepare to take your Highland Lakes vacation to the next level. This rustic modern home, situated on a no-wake cove of Inks Lake in Llano County, takes full advantage of its waterfront location with Instagrammable vistas from almost any point, indoors or out.

Just outside the home, you can’t help but be drawn to the covered patio with plenty of chairs and panoramic views of Inks Lake and the surrounding Texas Hill Country. No breeze? Just switch on the ceiling fans and return to chill-out mode.

From the patio, steps lead to an expansive lawn. Walk a bit farther and descend the next set of steps to the lake itself.

From there, take your pick from a smorgasbord of things to do. On the nearby dock, catch some rays or maybe a fish or two. Get in the water for a swim or glide along the surface in a kayak or canoe. They’re both available on site or you can bring your own boat — as long as it’s 21 feet or less. Just tie it to the mooring buoy or dock.

Come back after nightfall to watch as a canopy of stars fills a velvet black sky.

Back indoors, the surrounding countryside never seems far away as most of this custom-designed home’s 42 windows face Inks Lake. This lakeside home is contemporary but not pretentious and blends well with its surroundings.

An open floor plan makes generous use of wood on surfaces throughout. The two-story living room gives guests striking views of the water through its large windows, ample seating on an L-shaped sofa, a big-screen TV, and walls accented with mounted fish, a 1940s skimmer, and vintage fishing gear.

A few steps away are a fully equipped kitchen and dining area. The kitchen features a state-of-the-art JennAir cooktop and convection oven and just about anything else you need to create a memorable meal. Outdoors, a barbecue smoker and a gas grill await the griller in the family.

This home will sleep a total of eight with the main bedroom holding a king-size bed on the first level. Two other bedrooms are at the top of spiral stairs along a catwalk that overlooks the living room. They share a bathroom. One sleeps two on a queen-size bed; the other sleeps four on a queen and a set of bunks.

Area attractions abound, many just minutes away. The tasting room at the Torr Na Lochs Vineyard and Winery is a scenic, 12-minute drive. Head west on Texas 29 to Llano and enjoy its burgeoning art scene, picture-postcard downtown, and world-class barbecue.

With gorgeous lake views that relax body and soul, plenty of things to do for the active-minded, and more road trip destinations than you can cram into one stay, this could well be your one-size-fits-all vacation spot. It’s where to stay in Llano County.
